Mother on a Mission
Greener Me was a long time in the making. It started with a quest to make my home a haven for wellness.

My introduction to parenthood was not what I expected. I was a young mother with a baby that I just could not soothe. No-one seemed to know how to help us. I can remember being so exhausted and frustrated and desperate for this child of mine to just stop crying.

It was 1998. Years later my son would be diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, but at the time he was just a little boy who reacted to every form of sensory stimuli. By the time he was 6 months old he was in sensory overload, and I was at my wits end. The texture of his clothing and bedding, the room temperature and even how tightly we swaddled him all made a difference to his behaviour. As we went through the process of carefully recording what affected him and when, I realized that even the soaps we used to bathe and clean with affected him.
As I researched, I learned that the most natural alternative to the synthetically scented, sulphate-based cleaning products available at the time was hand poured soap, which often also contained toxic fragrance oils and dyes. Determined to find a solution, I learned Soapmaking and studied Aromatherapy. Through trial and tribulation, I learned which ingredients led to a happy healthy child, and which ingredients to avoid using in our home.
What I really wanted was to create products which made our home feel like a safe space for our family. Effective plant-based cleaning products which are biodegradable, free from synthetic fragrance oils, dyes, sulphates, parabens, and phthalates. Products which are never tested on animals and naturally scented with pure therapeutic essential oils. Cleaning products which could benefit our health and wellbeing beyond just cleaning our home.
Back then, my vision for these “clean” cleaning products was a pipe dream. It was years before biodegradable plant-based surfactants which perform as well as (or better than) the paraben and sulphate-based options we had in the 1990’s became available.
In 2023, after more than 20 years of making cold-pour soap I found the ingredients I needed to bring my dream to reality and Greener Me was born, in Victoria BC. Canada.
